Why is walking in Autumn good for my wellbeing?

Did you know that according to the National Trust, 43% of people struggle with feeling down as the days get shorter. But we’ve got some tips to help! Going on a walk during autumn can help fight off those winter blues, and here is how!

Autumn is a great time of the year to go for a walk, especially through a wooded area like a forest or park. Green areas become awash with colour over

The ground becomes littered with different colour leaves, helicopter seeds, berries and conkers.

Being in this beautiful environment, encourages us to look in awe at what is going on around us, and beyond what we have going on in our everyday lives.

 

Science bit

Leaves go through a process to shut down photosynthesis to retain valuable chemicals. This reveals the other chemicals that are in the leaves that have been hidden by the dominant green chlorophyll, including orange carotenoids, yellow flavanols, red and purple anthocyanins. Suggestion

Go for a walk on a crisp autumn day and use all your senses while out walking. Pick an autumn colour and notice everywhere you see it.

 

Go on a sensory journey and slowly notice –

5 things you can see

4 things you can feel, such as the temperature, the breeze, the sunshine on your skin, your feet on the ground, or nearby objects.

3 things you can hear, tune into the sounds all around you. Listen for the background sound such as the wind, water and birdsong.

2 things you can smell, see if you can smell 2 things while out on nature walks, like the trees, leaves.

1 thing you can taste, notice one thing that you can taste, food or drink, or the current taste in your mouth.
