How to go on an Awe Walk

Awe is described as a sense of wonder felt when people encounter something that amazes or transcends them. While children are far more likely to be awestruck than adults, don’t be disheartened, adults can relearn that feeling of awe!

An awe walk is when you feel a sense of wonder towards your surroundings while out for a walk. It encourages us to look outside of what is going on with ourselves and take notice of what is going on around us. Regular awe walks are found to boost positive feelings, such as compassion, gratitude and a growing sense of wonder (Sturm, 2020)

With beauty before me

May I walk,

With beauty behind me

May I walk,

With beauty above me

May I walk,

With beauty below me

May I walk,

With beauty all around me

May I walk

Wondering on the trail of beauty,

May I walk,

Walking Meditation

Suggestion

Pick a green or coastal area preferably that you have not visited before or have not visited for some time. If you’re local, walk around as if you were a tourist visiting the area for the first time. Look out with fresh eyes. Notice the detail. New features of the same place. Find a childlike sense of wonder — like you are seeing everything for the first time.

You can do this in a variety of places. Try different types of awe walks – forest area, mountain, along a river, coast or beach, historical building or monument, a stadium or arena.
