The History of Sunderland Mind

Sunderland Mind was founded over 50 years ago as the Sunderland Mental Health Group, a self-help initiative supporting individuals facing mental health challenges. From the start, the organisation embraced diversity and inclusion, with a steering group made up of people from various backgrounds.

 

Our Journey

  • 1973– Became a constituted organisation and affiliated with National Mind.
  • 1978 – Officially renamed Sunderland Mind.

 

Key Figures in Our History

Stuart Leon Kohn and Mike Ridley were instrumental in shaping Sunderland Mind.

Stuart, who served as Chairman for over 30 years, played a vital role in expanding mental health support in the region. His contributions included:

  • Helping to establish Sunderland Samaritans.
  • Driving the development of MHIST (Mental Health in South Tyneside) in South Shields.
  • Being an active member of Sunderland Lions for 34 years.

Stuart retired in 2005 but remained involved until his passing in 2006.

 

Growth & Development

In its early years, Sunderland Mind benefited from the Urban Aid programme, receiving:

  • £19,999 to purchase its premises.
  • An additional £20,000 to restore and renovate the building.

 

Today, Sunderland Mind continues to grow, supporting the mental health and wellbeing of individuals, carers, and families across the community.
